St Mary’s School is a co-educational school from Prep to Year 6. It is situated in the small township of Mooroopna. It is a Christian community in which all of its members have the right and responsibility to be part of its development.

 

OLSEL – What are we doing in our school?

Activities undertaken by school staff are as follows:

  • Planning with ‘ICPALER’ framework and the Collin’s model;
  • Working with the children on ‘Cued Articulation’ and Soundmakers;
  • OLSEL coordinator meeting with colleagues to discuss progress and concerns;
  • Purposeful planning and explicit teaching for oral language;
  • Conducting an information session for whole staff;
  • Consciously and explicitly teaching vocabulary (synonyms, compound words, adjectives);
  • Consciously and explicitly teaching Hearing Sounds in Words; and,
  • Teaching ‘Memory Games’ that encourage oral language.
  • Teaching through Big Books, focusing on oral language development;
  • ‘fleshing out’ the 5 “W” questions.
  • Professional Learning Teams have been established to support all teachers in Prep – Yr2.
  • Supporting language development, ‘saying it another way’, role playing, visualising, etc.

The next step is to continue to implement the above strategies. Teachers will also identify additional resources to enhance their planning and teaching.

A more detailed analysis of the student assessment data will be carried out to allow identification of targeted teaching activities.

A parent information session is to be held to highlight the importance of oral language in children’s learning.

About This School

School History

St Mary’s School, Mooroopna, was blessed and opened in 1936 with 60 pupils attending. The first lay teachers arrived in 1960, and three new classrooms were built two years later. In 1973, a School Board was formed under the direction of Fr Marriott and the enrolment was 208 pupils.

Three years later a new complex of classrooms was built with an administration building. The Parish Priest at this time was Fr M Duffy. Enrolment peaked in 1978 with 260 pupils. The first lay principal was appointed in 1984. Since this time, there has been a library and an Art/Music room added on. Two relocatable classrooms were added in 2003 and 2004. In 2007 four general purpose classrooms and a second amenities block will be built. The 2007 enrolment is approximately 305.

St Mary’s School is a co-educational school from Prep to Year 6. It is situated in the small township of Mooroopna and draws also on the surrounding fruit-growing areas. It is a Christian community in which all of its members have the right and responsibility to be part of its development.

The staff are committed to cooperative education, which includes the structuring of multi-age or composite classes. An integrated curriculum provides a variety of learning experiences for teachers and students to develop their individual skills and abilities and work cooperatively in small groups to expand the potential of every person.

St Mary’s School supports the Parish in its task of preparing children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Eucharist.
