OLSEL – What are we doing in our school?

Teachers have met on an ongoing basis to plan and embed oral language into the literacy planning.

Oral language activities being implemented are as follows:

  • enhancing language in Big Book interactions, including expanding vocabulary choices;
  • dramatising and demonstrating word meanings;
  • answering in sentences;
  • visualisation of text being read and listened to;
  • listening and following directions activities, at least once a week;
  • adaptation of literacy planner to incorporate an oral language component;
  • Parent session held to discuss the importance of expanding children’s oral language;
  • Parent/sibling story telling session- parents see good modelling of discussion about stories; and
  • Information from the OLSEL professional learning program presented at a staff meeting.

The next step – The school OLSEL Team will continue to support the teaching activities already introduced, following the initial response to the professional learning program. Analysis of the students’ assessment data from the project will be a critical action to allow for review of current teaching activities as well as to identify additional teaching activities reflective of the needs of the students.

About This School

History of the School

St. Agatha’s Primary School began in 1976. The first classes were held in the Cranbourne Public Hall in High Street, Cranbourne, later the junior classes moved to the Presbyterian Church Hall in Sladen Street and the Grade 5 and 6 classes were held in the double garage at the presbytery. By August, all classes were held at the present school site, and the buildings were blessed and officially opened on 14th November, 1976.

St. Agatha’s Primary School now has an enrolment of well over 300 students and all the classrooms are carpeted, heated, air-conditioned and have computers and other forms of modern technology – a far cry from the double garage in 1976.

The school has a rich history of community involvement and places a strong emphasis on pastoral care and educating the ‘whole child’, in accordance to the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.
In 2007, the school community chose “Courage, Faith and Love” to be St. Agatha’s Primary School Motto. The word “Courage” reminds us of the bravery St. Agatha displayed in the face of her persecution and “Faith” highlights the Catholic identity of the school and “Love” emphasises the Christian commandment of “Love One Another, just as I have loved you.” (Jn 13:34)
