What is phonological knowledge?  Why is it important?

The second of the ‘Big Six’ is phonological knowledge.  Phonological knowledge is the foundation of our understanding of how spoken words translate into written words.

Phonological knowledge is what we know about sound patterns in words. It includes being able to learn how to say unfamiliar words, being aware that some words share common sounds, that individual sounds can be blended to form longer sound sequences and being able to manipulate sounds in words.
